Search in Europe
Europe isn't one search market.
The EU alone has 24 official languages, several currencies and buyers who expect to be addressed in their own language, on their own country's version of Google. A German shopper searching on google.de uses different words, compares different competitors and trusts different signals from a French shopper on google.fr, even for the same product.
So we plan each market on its own terms. Keyword research happens in the local language rather than from a translated English list, pages are linked with hreflang so each audience lands on the right version, and prices, contact details and proof points are local. Google leads search almost everywhere in Europe, but a few markets, such as Czechia with Seznam, still have a local engine worth planning for.
- Keyword research in each market's language
- Hreflang and a site structure that scales across countries
- Prices, currencies and VAT shown the way local buyers expect
- Local citations and reviews in every country you serve
Site structure
Choosing a structure for multilingual sites.
There is no single right answer. The best structure depends on how many markets you serve, how your teams are organized and how much authority your main domain already has.
| Structure | Example | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Country domains | example.de, example.fr | Strong local trust and separate teams per market |
| Subfolders | example.com/de/, example.com/fr/ | Sharing one domain's authority across every market |
| Subdomains | de.example.com | Separate platforms or hosting for each market |

This is a high-level overview, not legal advice. Your data protection officer or legal counsel should confirm which rules apply to your business.
GDPR and your marketing data
The General Data Protection Regulation applies to any business that handles personal data of people in the EU, wherever the business is based. Every use of that data needs a lawful basis, such as consent or legitimate interests, and people have the right to access, correct and delete what you hold. For marketing, that shapes your forms, your CRM, your privacy notice and the vendors you work with, each of whom should sign a data processing agreement. Transfers outside the EU need a recognized mechanism, such as the EU-US Data Privacy Framework or standard contractual clauses.
Cookies, consent and measurement
The ePrivacy rules require consent before non-essential cookies, pixels and similar trackers run on a visitor’s device. Consent has to be informed, specific and as easy to refuse as it is to give. For advertisers, Google requires Consent Mode signals for ad personalization and measurement in the European Economic Area, so a correct consent setup is also a condition for running Google Ads well.
Email marketing
Sending marketing emails to consumers generally requires prior opt-in consent. Many countries allow a soft opt-in for existing customers buying similar products, as long as every message offers an easy way out. Rules for business-to-business email vary more from country to country, so we check them market by market.
Advertising platforms
Google, Microsoft Advertising, Meta and LinkedIn all run across Europe, and LinkedIn is especially strong for B2B. The Digital Services Act stops large platforms from targeting ads using sensitive data, such as health or religion, and from showing profiled ads to minors, so we build audiences from interests, keywords and your own customer lists instead. Political and social-issue advertising now faces strict EU rules, and some platforms no longer accept it in the EU at all.
Accessibility
The European Accessibility Act applies to many e-commerce and digital services sold to consumers in the EU. Building toward WCAG standards is the practical way to meet it, and it tends to improve conversion and search performance for every visitor.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Can you run campaigns in several European languages?
Yes. Each language gets its own keyword research, landing pages and ad copy, written for that market rather than translated word for word, because people search differently in every language. During onboarding we agree which languages we produce, how native-speaker review works and which markets to launch first.
How do you handle GDPR and cookie consent?
We start with an audit of what your site collects and why. Then we set up a consent banner that blocks non-essential cookies and pixels until visitors agree, configure analytics and ad tags to respect those choices, and make sure forms collect only what you need with a clear lawful basis. Your data protection officer or legal counsel should confirm the final setup.
How do you measure results when visitors decline cookies?
With a mix of Google Consent Mode, which lets Google model conversions from visitors who decline tracking, server-side tagging, and first-party data such as form submissions and CRM outcomes. Reporting focuses on leads and revenue you can verify rather than on click counts alone.
Should we use country domains or subfolders?
It depends on your markets and your teams. Subfolders on one domain share authority and are easier to manage, which suits most growing businesses. Country domains build strong local trust but need their own authority in each market. We recommend a structure after reviewing your current domain, your markets and your plans.
Do you work with UK businesses?
Yes. The UK has its own version of the GDPR and its own rules on cookies and electronic marketing, which are similar to the EU's but not identical. We set up consent, tracking and email for UK rules, and we plan pound-sterling budgets and google.co.uk search separately from your EU markets.
Which time zones do you work with?
Any of Europe's. Whether your team is on Western, Central or Eastern European time, we agree a regular call time at kickoff and keep work moving between calls through shared dashboards and written updates.
