Search in Aotearoa

A small market rewards the businesses that get the details right.

New Zealand buyers search on google.co.nz, check reviews closely and talk to each other, so your Google Business Profile, your reviews and your reputation carry more weight than in bigger markets. Many categories have only a handful of serious competitors in each region, which means a well-built local presence can move you up quickly.

The details matter. People search for places both with and without macrons, such as Taupō and Taupo, so we make sure your pages and listings cover both forms. We write in New Zealand English, research keywords for each region rather than for the country as a whole, and, if you also sell into Australia, use hreflang so your Australian pages don't outrank your New Zealand ones at home.

  • Keyword research by region, from Auckland and Wellington to Christchurch, Tauranga and Dunedin
  • Te reo Māori place names with and without macrons
  • Google Business Profile and review management
  • Separate New Zealand and Australian pages that don't compete

The Privacy Act 2020

The Privacy Act 2020 and its Information Privacy Principles govern how businesses collect, use, store and disclose personal information. Businesses must tell people why their information is being collected, keep it secure, let people access and correct it, and take care when sending it overseas, which includes many marketing platforms. Privacy breaches likely to cause serious harm must be reported to the Privacy Commissioner and the people affected.

Email and text messages

The Unsolicited Electronic Messages Act 2007 covers commercial emails and texts. You need the recipient’s consent, which can be express, inferred from an existing relationship or, in limited cases, deemed. Every message must clearly identify the sender and include a working unsubscribe option, and unsubscribe requests must be actioned within five working days.

Advertising standards

The Fair Trading Act 1986 prohibits misleading or deceptive conduct and unsubstantiated claims, and it applies online just as it does in print. That includes testimonials and reviews. The Advertising Standards Authority’s codes add industry rules on social responsibility and truthful presentation, with separate codes for health, alcohol and advertising to children and young people.

Working across the time difference

New Zealand’s working day begins while much of the world is still asleep. We schedule a standing call inside your day, share dashboards you can open whenever you like, and plan tasks so progress happens between calls rather than waiting for them.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do you work with New Zealand businesses remotely?

Yes. We serve clients across Canada, the USA, Europe, New Zealand and Australia, and every engagement runs remotely. You get a dedicated account manager, a standing call time that suits your team, live dashboards and replies within 1 business day.

How do you handle the time difference?

New Zealand is ahead of most of the world, so we agree a regular call slot at kickoff that sits inside your working day and plan the work so it moves forward between calls. Written updates and live reporting mean you never have to wait for a meeting to see progress or approve the next step.

Is New Zealand too small a market for SEO to be worth it?

Usually the opposite. Many categories have fewer serious competitors than in larger markets, so a strong website, a well-managed Google Business Profile and steady reviews can win the top local results sooner. The key is researching demand region by region, because search volume in Auckland and in smaller centres looks very different.

What does the Privacy Act 2020 mean for my marketing?

It sets out how businesses collect, store, use and share personal information, including information held with overseas providers such as email or analytics platforms. For marketing, that means collecting only what you need, telling people why, keeping it secure and reporting serious privacy breaches. We set up your forms, tracking and email tools with those principles in mind. Your legal adviser should confirm your obligations.

Can you manage both our New Zealand and Australian websites?

Yes. We build separate New Zealand and Australian pages with hreflang so each country sees the right version, local pricing and currency, and keyword research for each market. Many New Zealand businesses sell across the Tasman, and planning both markets together avoids pages competing with each other.

How long does it take to see results?

Paid search and Google Business Profile improvements can show results within weeks. SEO builds over months; in many New Zealand categories you should see rankings move within a few months, with competitive terms taking longer. We tell you upfront what is realistic for your market and report progress every month.
